When we bought our current home, there was a jack in the living room that was one of those awful dollar store wall jacks. There was a hole drilled in the wall, and the phone wires ran through the hole and the jack was not flush with the wall. My youngest child is on the spectrum, and delighted in spinning the wall jack around and around until the wires came loose and got bound up in the primary jack, rendering all other jacks in the house entirely unusable. Not okay for when I work from home and need my phone at my desk to actually work, and for the jack in my office to be able to run my fax machine, and when I need the security system to actually call out if there's something wrong. My spouse, of course, insisted on trying to fix the jack over and over and over and over again, and spent probably ten hours trying to solve the problem. Succeeding temporarily, only to have it recur the following week. Fed up, I just bought this. This simple Leviton jack solved my problem, and my problem has been solved for over a month. It took me about 20 minutes to install, but only because I had to do a little bit of extra work. I have neither an old or new work box for the jack and didn't feel like installing one, but you really don't need one. You just need to cut a hole large enough to fit the components in either the drywall or plaster. I eyeballed it and used a normal drill to start the corners and a Lenox folding saw to cut out the drywall around the existing phone wires. Matching up the wires was simple and from there I was able to just screw the plate into the wall using some random anchors I had lying around to make sure it won't move again. It's been a month, and my phone hasn't cut out once. My little spectrum kiddo has lost all interest with the jack since it no longer spins. Easiest $4 + 20 minute fix I've been able to make to my home.

Although it seems like it would be easy enough to manufacture a basic telephone wall jack outlet, Leviton has put some added thought into thier 40249-W. The outlet itself, looking from the outside, seems simple enough, and it is. What sets this outlet apart is the documentation that was included. The documentation is basically a basic wiring diagram which tells you which color wire goes where. This may be unnecessary for the majority of people who may install such fixtures as a part of their job, but to the weekend warrior or someone who is not terribly handy, the diagram saves time and frustration. Yes, I suppose you could just remember the order of the wires as they were installed on the previous outlet, but this can also become complicated. For example, I found that I was replacing an older 6P6C outlet, which is basically the same connector, but with added positions and wires for supplementary functions like grounding, or low-voltage power. Anyways, without the documentation, questions arise as to which wires go to which connections... I had four connections on this new Leviton outlet, which replaced a old no-name outlet with 6 connections, but only 4 wires connected, with no labeling. Thanks to the documentation, installation was a breeze, and it functioned correctly the first time! Mounting screws were included in the packaging. It works as expected. Wore connectors are clearly marked according to wire color.

Got it quick which was important to me

I disconnected the old jack and then spent an hour trying to figure out the wiring scheme, because the wires from the wall were not the same color scheme as the new jack. You have no idea how the technician wired the original jack. My fault as a rookie. The jack itself is great.
