Major international bestseller and critically acclaimed author Harriet Evans weaves an “absorbing tapestry…with a comic touch even in the midst of tragedy” ( Kirkus Reviews ) in this stunning family drama that will surprise you at every turn. When Martha, a wife and mother of three, sits down one late summer’s morning to write out the invitations to her eightieth birthday celebration, she knows that what she is planning to reveal at the party could ruin the idyllic life she and her husband, David, have spent more than fifty years building. But her family must know what she and David have sacrificed. She cannot live a lie anymore. The invitation goes out far and wide, calling her children and grandchildren back home to Winterfold, their rambling house in the heart of the English countryside. Bill, a doctor, was once a sweet, serious boy, eager to help his mother, but he’s not the man Martha thought he’d become. Florence—passionate, intellectual, one might say a little eccentric—is now an art history professor in Italy. And Daisy, the dark heart of the family, left years ago to be a charity worker abroad and never really came home. The reunion becomes a catalyst for a cascade of shocking secrets and unexpected events as the Winters grapple with the joy and the pain of the past. Review: Loved it - I loved reading this - hated when it ended. It has lots of fascinating characters and plot twists that keep you fully engaged - that means reading until early morning hours. Highly recommend Review: A Good Family Drama for Us - A Place for Us by Harriet Evans kept my interest from the beginning. It is a complicated, realistic family drama. The characters are interesting and varied. There is some suspense throughout the story, which makes the reader want to continue reading. An invitation is sent to the family members, a secret is to be revealed at the mother's 80th birthday party, and all (including the reader) are anxious to find out what the secret is. I think most people would enjoy this gradually unraveling story. It makes for a lively book club discussion.

Superb read!
I loved, loved this book. It was interesting from the very beginning. I laughed, I cheered, I got mad and I cried. It is a beautiful love story as well as a book all mothers would relate to. I'm buying Harriet's other books immediately.

I Just Loved It
Harriet Evans ... hmm ... I used to read her stuff ... then, I guess I lost interest. But this book is getting excellent reviews, so why not give it a try? Wow - I'm glad I did! "A Place for Us" is an A+, multi-faceted novel that keeps you from the first page to the last- the very LAST! No peeking ahead... And just when you think you have the characters figured out - you don't! What a treat.

A beautiful tale of one family and their secrets...
this book took me a little while to get into, as there were several different threads being woven together but they did come together beautifully! there was an interesting mix of characters, some of whom took awhile to warm to, but i'm glad I persevered with this delightful story....the ending was extremely satisfying!!

A place for us
I love family sagas. When the author describes bits and pieces of each family member always leaving something out, so you must keep reading to find out all their secrets. This is a good one, trust me.

Sad
So depressing I left the story half way in. However am in admiration of any writer to evoke such sentiments.
