Oh boy! I love a good short story especially one as puzzling and disturbing as this.. My colleague who read this book as a teenager and didn't really resonate with it, which I understand now… Sometimes, it takes a certain level of maturity and wisdom to appreciate the metaphorical meaning behind this classic!… I'm so torn about Gregor's perspective. He takes care of and provides for his family without expecting anything in return then he seems content with his life. But at the same time, I can't help wondering how much more he could have done for himself if he had only broken away from his family's expectations…?Perhaps he could have chosen a life where he was still able to help them while also allowing himself the freedom to live for himself…? When he transforms into someone incapable of working and providing, he is suddenly treated differently almost as if he has become useless. It's disturbing how quickly his worth within the family changes when he can no longer serve a purpose.. The family on the other hand, learns to work and support themselves rather than depend entirely on Gregor. In a way, his transformation forces them to confront a life they had grown comfortable avoiding. It teaches them that independence can be liberating and that sometimes, a change in circumstances can completely shift our perspective on life. (I personally experienced this exactly 2years ago!) I guess the question I had in mind was. Who enables whom? Does Gregor enable his family to become dependent on him or does his family enable Gregor to sacrifice so much of himself that he eventually loses sight of his own worth?

Bad book, good quality.
This isn’t a review to do with how the product came or how well its made, hence why I gave it 4 stars. The quality is great, I just think the book itself is poorly written.

Psychological and Thought-Provoking
The Metamorphosis is a psychological study that is interesting to read. Though it's obvious that Gregor is being transformed into a surreal figure, it's his thoughts and struggles with his emotions that make the story interesting. Even after an unimaginable happens to him, he still worries about work, his family and their financial situation. That's an indication of the depth of his responsibility identity. The progressive isolation of Gregor from his family is also very well expressed. It's an impossible story, but Kafka manages to make it emotionally real. It is uncomfortable, symbolic and open to interpretation, and is a classic to be revisited.
