Perfect Book For New Sewers
For the beginning sewer, I would rate this book 5/5, but for more advanced sewers I would probably rate it 4/5.I think this book is clearly laid out - the book starts by discussing important tools, how to read and trace patterns, grainlines and fabric, and basic sewing techniques. It then goes on to give very detailed instructions for a skirt, a blouse, a dress, a coat, and a bag. It includes three variations with instructions for each pattern, as well as photographs of lots of creative ideas for each of the five designs. The pattern pieces are included with the book, which is great. I really love the blouse, and I like elements of the coat, so I may make use of these patterns in the future. My overall impression is that this is the perfect book for someone who is interested in learning to sew clothes but doesn't have a lot of experience. The book outlines the essentials of sewing without getting too bogged down in the details. It emphasizes creativity while still highlighting the importance of technique (pressing seams, etc.). Most of the other "learn to sew" type books tend to give "patterns" for aprons or toys or crafty items, which never held much interest for me, and I am sure aren't of much interest for others who want to learn to sew garments. This, of course, is not an issue with BurdaStyle, which emphasizes the different garment patterns they have included. The instructions seem to be quite detailed, so they could be great for newer sewers. Also, these patterns do not have seam allowances (like the BurdaStyle magazine patterns), and it gives some good advice about how to add seam allowances and why it is better to make pattern alterations without them. I have always had great experiences with the drafting of the Burda patterns, so I would expect new sewers might be really pleased with the results they get from the patterns included with this book. I really think this book would be especially good for teens or young adults who are interested in sewing trendy clothes and want to learn some of the basics. As much as I think this book is great for beginners, I don't think it is the best book for an advanced home sewer. I know this isn't going to be one of my go-to books for sewing techniques, but I do like the inspiration and advice it gives for altering patterns to get totally different styles. I don't ususally feel very confident making drastic pattern alterations with most garment patterns and I think this book may give me more ideas for making major pattern alterations, although it doesn't discuss much technique. For the advanced sewer this book is more useful in terms of inspiration and ideas, as well as use of the patterns included in the book.Overall I would say this is a great book and fills a niche in the current sewing book market. I think it may be just a bit below my skill level at this point, but it is exactly the book I was looking for when I first started sewing. The inclusions of the patterns are great and make the purchase worth it for advanced sewers, and I really like that this book included inspirational designs from the BurdaStyle community members. However, I think where this book really excels is as a first sewing book for new sewers who want a guidebook for garment construction, but want to be able to exercise their own creativity in making clothes.

Great for beginners!!!
Best book in the whole wide world!!! lol The patterns and options are endless. I wish they made a few more of these.. It is different than using a envelope pattern. The instructions are super easy to understand and all the patterns are meant to be reused.Get it .. Great for beginners !!!

Good for sewing for young ladies up to size 14.
I've always loved Burda patterns, so I was looking forward to this book. It's good for beginners in that all the basics are covered, with step-by-step instructions. The patterns are very youth-oriented in my opinion. But I'm way past mini-skirts, so don't mind me. I did enjoy all the various interpretations of the patterns by sewists who took the sample pattern and went wild with it. Very fun, and I got a lot of inspiration along the way.WARNING: if you wear larger than a size 14, the patterns won't fit you. And that disappointed me cause Burda patterns fit everyone in real life. The multi-multi-patterns are a bit confusing, but you can do that. AND, I would have rather had a pants pattern instead of or in addition to the bag, but since I'm larger than size 14, it doesn't matter, now does it?Ummmm -- well, personally, if I had seen the book before I ordered it, I probably wouldn't have purchased it, but it's still worth the 4 stars, and it's a good book for many other sewists. You'll definitely get inspiration to take a basic pattern and have great fun with it.

Thorough, easy to understand.
As a novice I found the book easy to understand, very informative and thorough in its explanation of the sewing basics. The projects presented in the book are great wardrobe basics, but with lots of fun suggestions for amendments to give them a personal flair should one be so inclined. It even comes with patterns!

OK book with limited instructions
Shipping was fast. Honestly, I was a bit disappointed with the content. The pattern is printed in a european fashion and you need a roller and pattern paper to travel and then cut the patterns. It has enough pictures of different Variante of the individual patterns, but I'm missing for example different sleeve options or skirt length that are explained, but there really are any. From all the Variante one specific one is picked and that pattern is included, but unfortunately the choices picked are not even a good one.The sew instructions are OK but limited for a beginner. It's an OK book, but I will probably never look at it again.

reawakened sewing passion.
This book was given to me as a gift - I used to love sewing but life got in the way (kids, job, etc). I am inspired to dust off the old machine and reawaken my creativity. Love how the book is laid out and the idea of 5 basic pieces that I can add to or rework to suit my style. This is a step-by-step for people who have never sewn but it's also full of useful info for more seasoned sewers. If you're wondering about all the different possibilities in materials & incorporating different types of stitches & notions, this book seems to cover them all. I have already purchased copies for both my daughter-in-law who is a very talented seamstress and for my retired friend who is always talking about getting started.

Disappointed
I love the BurdaStyle website, and I couldn't wait to receive this book. I'm sad to say that I was not impressed. The basics were there and well done, but I found the patterns included with the book among some of the ugliest and least inspiring I have ever seen. Perhaps they are just too young for me, or too skinny, or too something, but I doubt I will ever use any of them... Ok, maybe the handbag. I should probably trace that one and sell the book. I'm upset that I actually spent Yuletide gift money on this book.

Great for any one who sews, beginner or advanced
This book walks you step by step on sewing. It doesn't matter if you are a beginner or advanced. The beginning of the book walks you through the basics of how to sew. As an advanced sewer I still learned a lot I didn't know. The included patters have about 12 variations to make each item your own. The dress, for example, takes a basic pattern and shows 3 designers styles and 14 styles by "regular" people who sew. The patterns all show how to make necessary changes, including size, to make it your own design. I'll need to buy another pattern again!
