Have you noticed recent price increases on this? It was only 29.99 in my cart and an hour later it showed in Prime at 77.99. Will wait to order this

Yes, it looks like scalpers and companies are taking advantage. The price is now $273. Just don't buy from bad sellers at this price like the current seller on here now.

Would this work on a covered patio? I was hoping that the lid would direct the smoke out the sides rather than straight up?

Thank you for your interest in this item. This is a wood burning patio fireplace. The smoke would go out the sides, but will immediately begin to rise. Depending on wind conditions, this may or may not be an issue. Depending on the size of the cover, it could trap the smoke underneath the ceiling and not work at all. This is not something we can determine prior to ordering the unit.

Can the screen be purchased separately?

Yes. I have found parts at https//shop.firesense.com/products

The product description says it comes with a retractable handle assembly for easy positioning. I only see fixed handles in the one picture.

Not sure what it means by retractable handle assembly. Mine came with fixed handle on top for the lid and one for the bottom tray so you can pull it around to where ever you want it placed.
